Renovation work on Mahatma Gandhi Museum is under way inside Canara High School at Dongerkery

MANGALURU: One of city’s oldest museums, the Mahatma Gandhi Museum, situated inside Canara High School at Dongerkery, is all set to get a major facelift. The century-old museum, which was closed to the public, is likely to be re-opened for visitors this November.
The museum is located in the A Subbarao Pai Memorial Hall on the school premises. It is named after Mahatma Gandhi, after he himself granted permission to the school management to name it after him.
Naresh Shenoy, a governing body member, Canara High School Association, said the century-old museum was closed, since no maintenance was carried out for several years.
Visitors were not allowed inside. Apart from the building lacking proper maintenance, there were water leakage and other issues.
“We are now carrying out renovation of the entire facility, and are planning to dedicate it on November 19. The day is observed as the birth anniversary of the late Ammembal Subba Rao Pai, founder of Canara educational and financial institutions. We are working on giving the facility a heritage look. The estimated cost of the renovation is about Rs 1.5 crore. The funds are pooled from alumni and well-wishers of the institution. The alumni and others are also requested to contribute any antique or unique items to the museum,” said Naresh.
According to history, the museum was inaugurated by Lord Erskine, governor of Fort St George, Madras, in 1935. The museum has a wide collection of taxidermy, antlers of different kinds of deer; animal skeletons, rocks, statues, currency, palm leaf inscriptions and antiques.
