PUNE: The court of additional sessions judge P P Jadhav on Friday convicted and sentenced a 32-year-old man from Vijapur in Karnataka to life imprisonment and fined Rs 1.25 lakh in the 2014 murder case of a one and a half year old boy at Ranjangaon MIDC in Shirur at rural Pune.
The court observed that the accused Dirappa alias Chakrappa Hattarkhillal mercilessly killed the helpless boy by inflicting fist blows and banged him on the floor because he could not resist him.
Judge Jadhav noted that the accused during the trial had taken a stand that the child died while consuming bhel because it had got stuck in its throat. But he later leveled allegations that the victim was killed by his mother Sujata and a jeep driver Pravin Bhandari who escorted them to Karnataka and tried to bury the dead body but they were caught by the public.
The accused had claimed that he was on duty when the incident happened on March 31 2014. An FIR holding him responsible for the murder was lodged with the Vijapur police in Karnataka. The murder case was later transferred to the Shirur police in rural Pune and the accused came to be arrested on September 2 2014.
The prosecution’s case is that on March 3 2014 Sujata had eloped with the accused and started staying with him in a rented house at Ranjangaon MIDC but there was frequent dispute among them because of the child. The accused, after killing the boy, threatened his mother not to disclose the incident and drove them to Karnataka in a jeep. The accused fled on the pretext of meeting his father.
Additional public prosecutor Namdeo Taralgatti examined 11 witnesses and relied on the testimonies of the boy’s mother-the sole eye witness to the incident and the jeep driver who escorted the victim’s body to Karnataka, medical evidence and other evidence like that the duo was staying together.
The judge considered the evidence led by the prosecutions for proving guilt of the accused beyond reasonable doubt.
