KOLKATA: A 47-year-old official of a private bank reportedly died by suicide at his Garfa home during a video call with his wife in Ahmedabad early on Monday.
Prasun Banerjee, who used a nylon rope to hang himself from a hook on the ceiling, was alone at his Purbachal Main Road apartment. Police said “family issues” were behind Banerjee taking the extreme step.
Banerjee’s wife told cops they were on a video call for a while and he was threatening to kill himself. Around 3.15am he followed up on his threat. She immediately called the police, but it was too late by the time cops reached the flat and broke open the door. A suicide note was found from the room.
“Around 3:35am, we received information that Banerjee had hanged himself. He was on a video call with his wife for several minutes before he committed the act. Our team brought down his body after breaking open the door, which was bolted from inside and took him to MR Bangur Hospital. Banerjee was declared dead at 5:35am,” said a senior police officer.
“We found a suicide note. We learnt from his relatives and friends that he was under tremendous mental pressure over personal and family issues,” the officer said.
Bank official transferred to Kolkata 10 months ago
Prasun Banerjee, a 47-year-old Garfa resident who died by suicide during a video call with his wife, was posted as a manager in the treasury department of a private bank at its Shakespeare Sarani office. He was transferred to Kolkata from Ahmedabad 10 months ago. His wife and two school-going daughters stayed back in Ahmedabad, police said.
“We are finding out whether concern about their studies — one of the girls will soon be appearing for her board examination — had led the parents to live separately,” said an investigating officer. “Necessary arrangements are being made to hold inquest and post-mortem examination of the deceased. The Garfa Police has registered an unnatural death case and is investigating the case,” he said.
The incident has led Kolkata Police to yet again try and popularise helpline numbers that people can contact to get counselling if they or anyone they know are going through any form of depression.
The aim of this 12-hour service – available everyday between 10 am and 10 pm – is to try and stop suicides in the city, Lalbazar sources said.
The city police have tied up with the NGO Lifeline Foundation for the purpose.
“Life is precious. Let failures be stepping stones to success. Do not give up! #reach out #emotionalsupport. 10am to 10pm. All 365 days. Call +919088030303, +913340447437, the post on the social media pages of Kolkata Police read.
The cops have also teamed up with FB and helped save at least five lives in the past few years after being alerted by their team.
