MANGALURU: Classes for the 43 students, from grade 1 to 7, at the 110-year-old Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Government Teachers Training Institute (TTI) School, Balmatta, is held in the one classroom that is on campus.
The school situated in the heart of the city was started during the British era. The campus also has an all-girls high school, PU and degree colleges. The 43 children and three teachers sit in a 300 sqft room for classes.
CITU district general secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal told STOI that the prestigious government co-ed school building was demolished about three years ago when construction of the degree college block started. The government had promised to build a separate block for the school and children and teachers were shifted to a small classroom. “Now, even after three years, there is no sign of a new building nor have arrangements been made for the students,” he rued.
Degree college is occupying building
Shekabba, president of SDMC, said they have run from pillar to post seeking proper classrooms for the students. They also approached MLA Vedavyas Kamath, who had promised that arrangements will be done. “There is no movement forward on the issue; our children are stuffed inside a class. Moreover, there are no washrooms and other amenities for children. We also need adequate teaching faculty,” he said, adding that they are striving hard to save the school.
Sources said that the school did have its own separate building which is now occupied by the degree college. The school had turned into a bilingual or Kannada-English medium school four years ago. As a result, there was a spike in admissions. “Earlier, only children of migrant labourers used to seek admission at the school. After it introduced bilingual education, it attracted local children too. Unfortunately, eight children took transfer certificates and joined other schools. The admissions to the school are also not encouraging under the present situation,” a source added.
When TOI visited the school, teachers said that they will get additional classrooms. A chemistry laboratory and office room will soon be converted into classrooms. However, the assigned rooms smell of chemicals and rainwater seeps in through the roof.
BEO North Sadananda AD Poonja said since there were no rooms in the college, they had occupied the TTI building. “It will be cleared within a week and students will have ample classrooms,” he added. The schoold has also been asked to build washrooms for the children.
