BENGALURU: Expressing concern over money and muscle power playing a major role in elections in the country, speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri called for comprehensive electoral reforms.
During introductory remarks in a debate on electoral reforms in the assembly on Monday, Kageri said elections have become all about money, caste and muscle power. Worse, those with criminal records take part in elections without any accountability.
Not just Lok Sabha or assembly elections, council elections too see irregularities, manipulations, use of money power. “Crores of rupees are spent without accountability. We’ve seen media reports about such irregularities in the just-concluded elections to 25 council seats from local bodies constituencies,” he said.
He also expressed concern over the increasing influence of religious institutions in elections and the rise in communal politics. As a result, people with concern for the well-being of the society find no role to play in elections. Even the model code of conduct is not being followed seriously, he said.
He called on NGOs and other organisations to work towards creating awareness about elections and also encourage active participation of youth in the electoral process.
The assembly is expected to debate this on Tuesday and Wednesday and may pass a resolution seeking electoral reforms.
