Kurar police have seized the cement mixer involved in the accident

MUMBAI: A 16-month-old girl and her mother were killed, while her father suffered injuries after a cement mixer rammed into their motorcycle on Western Express Highway (WEH) in Goregaon (E) on Saturday.
Police said the south-bound stretch of WEH where the crash occurred was pockmarked, which could have caused it. The cement mixer driver was arrested and later released on bail.
This is the second accide-nt in Goregaon (E) involving the death of a child in two months. In December, five-month-old Arfan Pathan, who was on a bike with his parents, was killed after a motorist, allegedly drunk and driving in the wrong direction, rammed into them.
On Saturday night, Abdul Khalid Shaikh (26), his wife Nilofer (25), and their daughter Zainab, were returning to their Vile Parle home on their bike, while his nephew Shifanuddin Sayyad and mother were on another two-wheeler. “Sayyad had come down from Hyderabad so we made dinner plans at my sister’s place in Kandivli,” Shaikh, a madrassa teacher, told the police.
At 11pm, Shaikh was on the flyover opposite Oberoi mall when the cement mixer rammed into him from behind. “We fell on the road. My right leg got trapped under the bike and the cement mixer crushed my wife and child,” he said. He gestured Sayyad to stop the vehicle. The driver, Sudarshan Saroj (51) was taken to Kurar police station where he was booked for causing death by negligence. Shaikh was rushed to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital.
“We have sent Saroj’s blood samples to the lab to establish if he was drinking. The stretch where the crash occurred is uneven and covered with pits. We will probe the sequence of events that led to the crash,” said senior inspector Satish Gadhve.
