MUMBAI: Two men cleaned out the savings bank account of a senior citizen of Rs 22 lakh after borrowing his smartphone on the pretext of playing online games. The complainant realised he had been duped only when a balance of Rs 20,000 was left. He then lodged a complaint at Dindoshi police station.
The complainant is a retired supervisor with the BEST and now runs a business of rental cars. He had sold one of his flats in Andheri and deposited a part of the sale proceeds, up to Rs 26 lakh, into his bank account. He would use some of the money in his account.
Around 5am everyday, the complainant would head out to keep a check on his rental cars at a space near Dindoshi bus depot. Thereafter, he would visit a stall nearby for a cup of tea. At the tea stall, he got acquainted with two men, Shubham Tiwari and Amar Gupta. Regulars at the stall, the two men quickly befriended the complainant.
Tiwari works as a fridge repairman while Gupta is a food app delivery boy. Tiwari would borrow the complainant’s cellphone to play online games while they all had tea together.
On July 16, the complainant went to the bank to get his account statement and was stunned to find a balance of only Rs 20,509. On asking for a detailed statement, he found that between April and June, Rs 22.35 lakh had been transferred from his account. Tiwari and Gupta had operated his digital wallet and used his password to transfer the amount in phases through five UPI transactions.
After lodging an FIR, a team from Dindoshi police station, including officers Chandrakant Gharge and Vijay Pawar, in an operation headed by DCP Somnath Gharge, tracked the accused and arrested them. But the police are yet to make any recovery. The police said that the two accused were likely to have splurged some of the defrauded amount on drinks.
