MUMBAI: A 53-year-old solicitor and film-maker from Colaba has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old college student under the pretext of giving her a break in modelling and the fashion industry.
The accused describes himself as an independent editor, legal counsel and documentary film-maker and is prominent across social media channels. The Colaba police have booked him under IPC sections 354A (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and under the stringent Protection Of Children From Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. He will be produced before the special Pocso court on Saturday.
On January 7, the girl was in a pizzeria in Colaba with her mother to celebrate her uncle’s birthday when the man approached them. He introduced himself, complimented the girl on her looks and said he could make a career for her in the glamour world of fashion and modelling. He shared his mobile number and asked them to meet him in his office at the Pasta Lanes in Colaba, said the complaint filed by the girl’s mother.
The next day, when the complainant and her daughter went to the accused’s office, he showed them glossy pictures of various models and assured them the teen would bring them prosperity and make a great career in fashion. He asked her to join from the next day.
On January 9, when the girl reached his office, he made her try out several different outfits. Later, she learnt that he had installed CCTV cameras in both the changing rooms she had been asked to use. The Colaba police said they have seized the CCTV cameras and footage from the accused’s office and further investigations are underway.
The complaint said the man asked her to get on his scooter and ferried her to various shoot locations. All along, he was touching her inappropriately. The girl told the police that he also shocked her by asking about the specific sizes of her bosom and other body parts.
