MUMBAI: The driver of a school mini bus was was “drunk” while transporting kindergarteners back home and fell off the bus at a drop point at Kandivli on Wednesday. Parents who met Shuchi Sinha, principal of Billabong High International School, Malad, claimed that the school head insisted that the driver had halted after complaining of chest pain, but a copy of the report from Nobel Hospital available with TOI showed “alcohol intoxication/phenyl poisoning”.
No police complaint has been registered. The driver, Ajay Kumar (35), was discharged on Thursday.
When the five or six children, who were on board, did not get home within 45 minutes, they called the woman helper accompanying the 20-seater bus. Parents said they learnt that the driver fell off when the bus had halted at Dahanukarwadi.
A parent of one of the children said: “My neighbour, who helped the driver, said he was drunk. My child and others on the bus were crying and were made to alight,” said a parent. The school bus coordinator later reached the spot and drove the students home.
Another parent alleged that the driver could have consumed alcohol on the school premises before starting the trip. Parents said drivers must be made to take a breath alcohol test before they start off any school bus. They said complaints had been made to the school authorities about the driver chewing tobacco while transporting students.
A school spokesperson said they are investigating the incident. “…We will proceed to take further action once the inquiry report is generated,” said the spokesperson.
