Tetrapods have been removed at some locations because of Coastal Road work

MUMBAI: Marine Drive residents have been witnessing vibrations they call “tremors akin to an earthquake”. In a letter to BMC chief IS Chahal, a group of residents have written they have never experienced the phenomenon. They attribute it to the removal of tetrapods for Coastal Road work.
Anirudh Somani, who lives in Shree Niketan, said, “A help who works in a building close by informed us that residents there as well had felt the tremors. These are the same buildings opposite where tetrapods have been removed.”
“Earlier, the tetrapods would absorb the impact of strong monsoon waves and protect Marine Drive’s seaward wall from impact; hence, the impact would not radiate till the building. However, now the wall is pounded by strong waves, giving no buffer. Hence the impact can be felt on the buildings,” the letter stated. “This is a serious matter and must be investigated and rectified immediately as continuous shaking over extended periods of time can cause severe and permanent damage to the structural integrity of the buildings and can result in damage to property and harm lives of the residents of these old heritage precinct buildings built in the 1950s.”
Reclamations for the Marine Drive started in the 1920s and the first buildings came up in the early 1940 towards the south, gradually moving up north. Buildings like Shree Niketan and Gobind, which are included in the ones currently affected, were among the last to come up (in the 1950s) as part of the stretch’s art deco precinct. Thus, the affected buildings are around 70 years old.
A BMC official said the complaints from individual buildings would be verified. “Monitoring instruments have been placed. There are still four lines of secant piles which are about 15 metres deep, to thwart any impact of waves.”
