AURANGABAD: Aurangabad and several other parts of the Marathwada region witnessed sustained spells of light showers in the 24-hour period till Sunday morning.
Stating that many districts in the region have already witnessed excess rainfall, the agricultural experts have underlined the need for a dry spell of monsoon to ensure conducive conditions for the kharif crops.
Marathwada, comprising eight districts, recorded average 9mm rainfall till Sunday morning, taking the total rainfall tally since June 1 to 439 mm. It accounts for 158% of expected showers and 65% of total seasonal rainfall received by Marathwada between June and September, revealed the official data.
K K Dakhore, the agricultural meteorologist at Parbhani-based Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Agricultural University, said excess showers, especially in July, have increased the water content and moisture in the soil.
“While the recent weather conditions offering spells of light to moderate rain have ensured necessary percolation of water in the agricultural soil, a dry spell is essential for the benefit of the crops. The gap in rainfall will also provide time to the farming community to perform necessary activities,” he said.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), many parts of Marathwada are likely to witness spells of light to moderate rain over at least next 48 hours with lower chance of the desired dry spell.
Besides cotton and soyabean, Marathwada is a major cultivation belt for different oilseeds during the kharif season.
As per the official data, sowing on over 41 lakh hectare has taken place in the region during the current kharif season so far.
