PUNE: Nashik district has topped Covid vaccine coverage in the 12-14 age group, with about 90% of the eligible population covered. Jalna and Sangli districts – with 86% and 85% coverage – are inching closer to complete coverage as well.
But Mumbai, which has the highest number of beneficiaries in this age bracket (3.95 lakh), is still seeing extremely slow uptake – only 35% of children have received their first dose. The situation is no better in Pune – only 55% of children in the 12-14 age group here have taken the first dose and 30% have been given both.
Average rate of vaccination across the state for this group, according to a report from the immunisation office, is 62% for the first dose and 32% for the second. Dr Sanjay Patil, chairperson of the IMA’s Hospital Board of India, Pune chapter, said, “Average vaccination rate is good across the state, but there are a few pockets that need attention. One of the reasons why Mumbai and Pune have low vaccination rates could be the high number of beneficiaries.”
Dr Patil said all efforts should be made to widen vaccine coverage among children. “The role of paediatricians is very important, in giving some much-needed impetus to the drive. We are getting reports of special vaccination camps being conducted for students, but they need to be conducted a bit more aggressively,” he said.
Some 2,930 beneficiaries were vaccinated in Pune district on Sunday.
So far, district authorities have administered a total of 1.87 crore doses of Covishield, Covaxin, Corbevax, Covovax and Sputnik V.
