KOLKATA: To prevent unauthorised parking of VIP and police vehicles in front of the airport terminal, Bidhannagar Police and Kolkata airport authorities have made a designated free parking zone 150 metres before the airport gates, but are still struggling to contain the violations.
Parking cars illegally before the Kolkata airport terminal became a bone of contention on Friday night with police asking stationary cars near Kolkata airport’s arrival terminal to drive into the parking lot. An actor refused to do so till his wife who flew in from Chennai boarded the car which led to filing of a complaint and counter complaint on Friday.
Cops said, the ongoing Metro construction work has already taken up a substantial amount of space in the city side area of the airport terminal. With frequent squalls delaying flights leading to clubbing of a large number of passengers at the airport together, make the road outside the terminals further congested.
“Hence, we are trying to keep the area outside the airport free of cars clogging the entrances. While strict action is being taken for unauthorised parking by private cars, a separate arrangement has been made for VIP cars and cars belonging to government and policemen who often need to park the vehicles at the airport to pick up or accompany dignitaries,” said an airport official.
Currently an area has been designated opposite to the old domestic terminal earmarked for VIP parking and a road has been carved out where from the vehicles can approach the airport terminal once the dignitaries arrive.
“Arrangements have also been made at the third tier of the underground parking lot for parking of VIP cars in special cases,” said an off-icer of Bidhannagar Commissionerate.
However, TOI found on Saturday that drivers operating VIP vehicles still park on the space in front of the airport terminal and crowd the entrance.
“We do plead before them to remove their vehicles and park it at the designated zone, but on most occasions they don’t listen and we don’t dare to book them either,” said an official of the parking agency employed by the airport authorities.
Among the violators are state government vehicles fitted with beacons and boards on windshields and back of the cars to proclaim they belonged to the government, cars belonging to police, politicians and magistrates as well. A section of police and airport staff also park their bikes outside the departure zone.
