The STF seized the explosive materials from a goods vehicle and arrested three men in July last year. The investigation was later transferred to NIA.

According to the NIA officials, the accused were brought to a session court here on Saturday which sent them to the NIA custody and from there, the arrested accused were taken to the federal agency’s office at Salt Lake for questioning

“It is suspected that the explosives seized last year were illegally sold to people who did not have the licence to handle such materials,” an NIA official said.

Mohammad Nurujjaman’s lawyer told the court that his family has a licence for trading in explosives used in mines and stone quarries.

Following the arrest made by NIA, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Bengal unit’s chief spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said the arrests prove that Bengal is a haven for anti-national elements.

Responding to the BJP’s attack, Trinamool Congress (TMC) spokesperson Jay Prakash Majumdar said that the licence for trading in such explosives is only issued by the Centre.

“BJP should stop blaming the state government for everything,” he added.
