Nikhat Zareen wins historic gold at Women’s World Boxing Championships

India’s Nikhat Zareen on Thursday became the fifth Indian to win a gold medal at the Women’s Boxing World Championships after she defeated Thailand’s Jutamas Jitpong in the 52kg final in Istanbul. All of the Indian boxers will receive their medals on Friday. 

Nikhat, Manisha and Parveen’s efforts saw India’s overall tally at the World Boxing Champions rise to 10 gold, 8 silver and 21 bronze medals across all editions. 

Nikhat Zareen had been nearly flawless in all of her wins, leading up to the final. 

She began her medal quest at the World Championships with a 5-0 drubbing of Fatima Herrera in the first round, in the pre-quarterfinal, the boxer downed Mongolia’s Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg.

Nikhat continued her impressive run with another 5-0 win over English boxer Charley Davison to confirm a medal for her nation, and in the semifinal, she got the better of Brazilian boxer Caroline de Almieda. 

That set up a stunning finale for Zareen, where she again triumphed with a 5-0 victory, to complete a resounding campaign for herself. 

MC Mary Kom was the last Indian woman boxer before Zareen to win a gold, when Mary Kom clinched gold back in 2018, in Delhi.
