Guidelines pending, the state government has announced a new programme for the general public and private institutions to adopt a cow housed in rescue shelters for an annual sum of Rs 11,000. ‘Punyakoti Dattu Yojane’ will seek to help gaushalas (cow shelters) across the state maintain and feed rescued cows, oxen and buffaloes.
“Most of the bovines we get at our shelter are rescued from highways, when they are being either smuggled or sent across the border to slaughterhouses,” Sunil Dugar, general secretary, Akhil Karnataka Prani Daya Sangha, told TOI.
In the backdrop of Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020, an allocation of Rs 50 crore has been made in the budget to increase the number of gaushalas in the state from 30 to 100.
The budget has also sought to provide financial assistance to gaushalas by helping them convert bio-waste into eco-friendly products under the ‘Gomatha Sahakara Sangha’ scheme. A research cell is proposed to be established at the University of Veterinary Sciences for the development of certification and technicality of cow manure.
Another scheme — Adopt a Monument — has also been listed, which will provide the public an opportunity to adopt state’s archaeological monuments for their protection and development.
