PUNE: A two-wheeler rider was killed and five others were injured — three of them seriously — after a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation bus hurtling down the Shankar Maharaj flyover towards Swargate along the busy Pune-Satara road ploughed through vehicles waiting for green signal at the Padmavati traffic junction around 11.20am on Thursday.
The bus hit seven two-wheelers, an autorickshaw and a car. The car got trapped between the bus hurtling down the flyover and another MSRTC bus. Traffic was disrupted for over an hour.

One killed, 5 injured as MSRTC bus ploughs through vehicles,

Senior inspector Swati Desai of the Sahakarnagar police said, “The bus driver prima facie told us that the brakes of the vehicle failed, resulting in the accident. We are verifying his claims following an inspection by experts from MSRTC and the regional transport office (RTO). The Satara-Pune bus was going to MSRTC’s Swargate bus depot from Katraj.”
Police identified the deceased as Sanjay Manikrao Kurlekar (52), a resident of Wanowrie. “Kurlekar was rushed to the Sassoon General Hospitals with other injured people, where he succumbed during treatment,” inspector (crime) Yunus Mulani of the Sahakarnagar police said. The three seriously injured victims were undergoing treatment at the hospital, while the remaining two were discharged, he said.
Sachin Shinde, MSRTC’s Swargate depot manager, told TOI, “We are investigating the cause of the accident. There were 43 passengers in the bus, a non-stop Satara to Pune service. It had no conductor. We had an initial talk with the bus driver. He said he suddenly felt that he had lost control of the vehicle because of a brake failure. We shall thoroughly check it before arriving at a conclusion.”
Another MSRTC official said, “Many of our buses had been off road and without regular maintenance for six months because of the staffers’ strike. We are checking all the buses and they are being released only after engineers are convinced that they are fit to operate. The checks will be made stringent.”
At the time of the mishap, many two-wheelers were waiting at Padmavati junction, for the red light to turn green. The bus driver attempted to stop by crashing into the compound wall alongside the flyover, but his effort did not yield any result.
Bavdhan resident Devjyot Bhaskar Singh, who was driving a car, told TOI, “We had stopped at signal after driving down the flyover. Suddenly, there was a loud noise behind my car and then there was an impact. I turned and spotted the bus in the rear. It pushed my car ahead after ramming it. There was another MSRTC bus in front of my car. My vehicle crashed into it. But still, the bus kept on pushing my car from the rear and I asked my wife to get out immediately.”
Abhijit Patil, a scooter rider, said, “I just survived. But my scooter has been completely damaged. The bus came from behind and hit my scooter. I was thrown away and did not get injured badly.”
