NASHIK: Water storage across 24 medium and major dams, situated mostly in the western parts of Nashik, has dipped to a new low this season despite the recent heavy rain in parts of the district.
The storages in reservoirs have now touched 15,128 million cubic feet or the 23%-mark of the total of 65,664 mcft across all the reservoirs.
Live storage of the Gangapur dam complex comprising three dams – Gangapur Gautami Godavari and Kashyapi – was 1,191 mcft or 22% of its capacity as against 2,617 mcft or 28% that was available during the corresponding period last year.
Nashik district has witnessed non-uniform rainfall at different places in June. The district has received 83% of the expected rain so far.
The revenue authorities, however, pointed out that this year, Malegaon and Chandwad had received more than 200% rain while Baglan, Kalwan, Nandgaon, Niphad and Sinnar have received more than 100% rain.
“All of these areas fall in rain-shadow region of the district and, hence, none of them have catchment areas of the dams. The talukas having these dams – Igatpuri, Trimbakeshwar, Peth, Surgana – have received rainfall ranging from 26% to 70% only,” the officer said.
Igatpuri that receives highest rainfall in the district has received only 26% showers so far.
“This is the reason dam water levels are receding. They are falling week by week. The current stock of water is expected to be available for drinking purposes till July 31 only. It is important that all areas of the district get rain as even the farmers are waiting for good quantum of downpour to go ahead with full-fledged sowing activities,” a senior officer from the Water Resources Department (WRD) said.
