Palak Muchhal is currently on a roll and it wouldn’t be wrong to say that she is living her dream. While she is currently busy churning out chartbusters, she also takes out the time for some philanthropic work. In an exclusive interview with ETimes, the young singer spilled the beans on her non-musical background, getting her big break from Salman Khan, and her charitable work. Excerpts…

Despite not having a background in music, what attracted you to it?
I don’t come from a musical background. I come from a Marwari family and nobody in my family sings. I started singing when I was two-and-a-half. During the sangeet function of my uncle’s wedding, I saw everyone performing and told my mom that I also wanted to go on the stage. She thought that a two-and-a-half-year-old would probably recite a poem, because I had just started speaking. I went to the stage and sang, ‘Chalri Sajni Ab Kya Soche’, which is an iconic song. That was the moment that my mom realised I was interested in singing. Then she got me to train in music.

When did you realise that you wanted to do this for the rest of your life?
I think I realised that I wanted to become a playback singer when I was four and by then, I had already started travelling across the world, performing real-life concerts. So, that was the age that I decided to be a playback singer.

Do you think if it was not for Salman Khan, your journey as an outsider would have been different and perhaps more difficult?
Of course, getting my first break was a very big deal. When I came to Mumbai from Indore, I thought I would have to struggle a lot for years. I had planned to go to offices and play my demo CD to ask for work, but I didn’t have to do anything of that sort. I came here and the first person I met was Salman Khan sir and he made me sing in his film soon; it felt like a dream come true. To have my first song in a Yash Raj movie, singing for Katrina Kaif and Salman sir’s movie was a big deal. The first person to show his faith in you is always very special and I think if Salman sir had not recommended my name, my break would have been delayed. It would also not have been as smooth as it was.

Any music composers left on your to-work-with wishlist?
When I came here, I had a very long list of composers, who I wanted to work with. I think, mostly, all of the names have been ticked off.

Apart from being a playback singer, you are known for your philanthropic work. How did it begin and what more do you plan to do?
Yes, I have been singing for a cause ever since I was a kid. All the proceeds from my concerts go for heart surgeries. So far, 2236 surgeries have been done, and there are 423 patients still on the waiting list. That’s the purpose of my life.
