Parliament on Tuesday passed the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2022, which seeks to merge three municipal corporations into a single entity in the national capital, after Rajya Sabha approved it with a voice note.
The opposition has expressed concerns over the Bill, saying that it amounted to foiling the Delhi civic election process and also undermining the federal separation of powers.
This development comes after the State Election Commission (SEC) last month deferred the announcement of date of Delhi civic polls after receiving a communication from the Centre. Soon after, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said that polls were delayed as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has conceded defeat.
BJP is currently in power in all the three Delhi civic bodies.
According to the Bill, which was passed by the Lok Sabha last week, the municipality wards need to be redrawn and the number of council seats need to reduced to 250 – a process that could take months.

UG admissions in AU through CUET-2022 this year, preparations begin
Following the decision of the union ministry of education to hold a common entrance test (CUET) for admission in all the central universities of the country, the Allahabad University authorities here have started making preparations for the exam. AU’s coordinator (admissions), Prof JK Pati informed that admissions for the UG courses at AU would be done solely through Central University Entrance Test-2022. 3 killed, 30 injured as double-decker bus overturns in Ayodhya
Three people were killed while 30 other passengers were injured when a double-decker bus they were travelling in overturned on Lucknow-Gorakhpur National Highway on Tuesday morning while trying to overtake another vehicle, police said. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed condolences over the incident and directed district magistrate and SSP to ensure speedy rescue and relief operations.

Over half of IIT-B graduating batch preferred physical classes: Survey
Mumbai A majority of students of the 2021 graduating batch of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay either lost interest in online classes or rarely joined class discussions. According to the senior survey report released this week by the institute’s in-house magazine Insight, only 26.7% students said they attended 80-100% online classes, whereas the rest bunked lectures often. Over 50% of students also highlighted that going to class physically was important.

VB arrests middleman for taking bribe after plaint on Punjab graft helpline
The vigilance bureau, Ferozepur, has arrested a middleman, allegedly engaged by a patwari, for taking ₹1,000 as bribe from a Jalalabad resident in Fazilka on Tuesday. Lakhbir Singh, senior superintendent of police, VB, said that a resident of Jalalabad in Fazilka district, Satnam Chand, had bought a piece of land, but to get its mutation done, the patwari concerned allegedly demanded bribe.
