AMRITSAR: Four days after BJP-led Haryana government asked the Supreme Court to ensure completion of the remaining portion of the disputed Satluj-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal following failure of the talks between Punjab and the neighbouring state, Punjab unit of the saffron party on Monday passed a resolution against the sharing of the state river waters with other states.

The resolution was passed during a two-day state executive meeting of the BJP as a “political resolution”, that ended on Monday. “The political resolution was proposed by Sunil Jakhar, Manoranjan Kalia and Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi endorsed it. After that various leaders gave their valuable suggestions over it. The discussion was held on this resolution for two hours”, said BJP state president Ashwani Sharma, while sharing proceedings of the meeting.

He said, “Often the BJP leaders are everywhere asked to clear their stand on the SYL issue. I think passing of this resolution has put an end to these questions. In this resolution, it has been stated by the party that Punjab does not have any water to give it to any other state”.

In the meeting, a discussion was also held on evolving strategy to reach out to village and booth levels in Punjab. Notably, former CM Captain Amarinder Singh who joined the BJP and was appointed as member of national executive of the saffron party, did not attend the meeting, while Jakhar who was also appointed on the same post, attended it on both days of the meeting. Former finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal, who recently joined the BJP, also did not attend the meeting. Almost all other former Congress leaders remained present during the meeting which was also addressed by national leader of the saffron party.

Kartarpur Corridor hailed, concerns on trade with Pak

A resolution was also passed to hail the steps taken by Narendra Modi government for the Sikh society, including opening of Kartarpur corridor, scrapping of black list of Sikhs, giving shelter to Afghan Sikhs. When asked to clear stand on the Sikh prisoners, Sharma said, “These are matters of legal procedure, that will be sorted as per law. In some cases, the Bandi Singhs have been released. I will give the details in the coming days. We should also mention the release that has been done”.

Replying to a query about opening the border with Pakistan for trade, he said, “This issue is concerned with the security of the country. This is a sensitive issue. With every passing day, drones are being sent to India from across the border. Drugs and weapons are being smuggled through these drones. How can we imagine having trade with this country (Pakistan)?” “If the trans-border trade is allowed in Gujarat, the state government is able to seize the consignments of the drugs, while the state government of Punjab is failing in doing so”, he added.
