MUMBAI: Peak power demand in Mumbai broke an all-time record to touch 4,129MW on Friday, sources said. The last peak demand recorded was a day earlier at 3,984MW and prior to that on June 1 at 3,971MW. The demand shot up by 145MW in a day.
The Trombay thermal plant generation during peak demand was 724MW, while Tata Power’s peak demand also rose to a record 1003MW for 15 minutes on Friday afternoon. However, officials said that they had a backup of 1,400MW to supply to consumers across the island city and suburbs, which is why there was no shortfall. BEST’s demand crossed 900MW in the island city while officials from Adani Electricity, which caters to 31.5 lakh suburban consumers, had a peak demand of 2,161MW. An Adani Electricity spokesperson said, “Our peak demand increased by 5% in comparison to last year. Our Artificial Intelligence-based power forecasting model enabled us to accurately predict and meet demand at the most optimal power purchase cost.”
