The recovered motorcycles and scooters are worth Rs 14.9 lakh

PUNE: The drive launched to curb the spurt in vehicle theft cases has started yielding results as the city police recovered 32 stolen motorcycles and scooters, collectively valued at Rs14.96 lakh, following the arrest of eight men, including criminals on record and first-time offenders, since July 11.
Pune commissioner of police (CP) Amitabh Gupta told TOI,” Vehicle thefts are on the rise and have become a major problem for the police. Seven to 10 two- and four-wheelers get stolen from different parts of the city on a daily basis. We are making special efforts to increase the rate of detection in vehicle theft cases.”
Gupta said, “We have framed a new special operating procedure to prevent and detect vehicle thefts. We have given a series of briefings to senior police officers to focus their attention on preventing and detecting such crimes. We have started laying traps at hotspots to arrest criminals and others involved in such crimes.”
Additional commissioner of police (crime) Ramnath Pokale told TOI, “We have registered 931 vehicle theft cases since January 1. We have identified 88 hotspots where four or more vehicles have been stolen from one particular spot. We have instructed our personnel to monitor the hotspots on a daily basis to curb the thefts. A smart application has also been launched for sharing details of the progress made by policemen in such cases.”
Pokale said, “The modus operandi used for stealing the vehicles includes opening locks with a master key, breaking handle locks by force and pulling the ignition pipe.”
