PUNE: The state prisons department’s unrelenting efforts to improve lives of convicts and under trial prisoners through education and reintegrate them into society after serving a sentence have succeeded, with 80 prisoners lodged in jails across the state graduating in the last year.
The department’s motto, reformation and rehabilitation of convicts, also saw seven inmates become postgraduates. A few graduated from Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, (YCMOU) while the rest are from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

A study centre set up in jails across the state in 2014 has guided over 1,800 inmates till date to complete their education and earn a degree, with the most graduates passing out from the District Central Jail in Thane, said additional director general of police (prisons and correctional services) Amitabh Gupta.
Gupta said, “Through these study centres, the inmates are given free admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The convicted prisoners are taught the importance of education.”
There are a total of 64 prisons in the state, including nine central prisons, one for women, 28 district prisons, and 19 open prisons. The state prison department provides free education to the prisoners serving a sentence.
From 2019 till January 31, 2023, 89 prisoners were approved for a special 90-day sentence remission. About 60 days of special sentence remission was granted to six prisoners who completed certificate courses under deputy inspector general of jails’ authority.
A preliminary examination is conducted twice a year, and inmates who pass this test are admitted to the or commerce streams, as per their choice. The Std X and XII equivalent courses, diploma, degree, postgraduate, and certificate courses are available in the Jail Examination Centre.
“Through this initiative, inmates will get a chance for rehabilitation and live a respectable life once they complete their sentence. The educational qualifications will also help them find employment and earn a decent living for their family,” Gupta added.
