PUNE: A prominent city builder has lodged a complaint with the Bund Garden police about being threatened by two persons, including a woman, between March 3 and March 7 to pay Rs 40 lakh. The anti-extortion cell of the city crime branch has since taken over the investigation.
The 40-year-old builder told police that he had received voice as well as video calls from four different cellphone numbers. The callers asked him to put a bag containing the money in a car parked near an IT park in Kharadi.

The modus in this case is similar to the case being investigated by the Bharati Vidyapeeth police in which a former corporator’s son was targeted for Rs 30 lakh.
Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Amol Zende told TOI, “Our examination of both the FIRs has revealed that the callers involved in both cases are the same. We have also identified one of the callers and will arrest him soon. The caller has already been arrested by the Chandannagar police in two separate cases registered in 2021 and 2022. In these two cases, he issued threats to women and in another case, he had defamed a woman who refused to marry her.” Zende added that the police were trying to track down if the caller had accomplices. “We suspect it is just one person who is making calls by changing his voice, image and location,” he said.
