PUNE: A dispute over stopping a woman motorcyclist for driving on the wrong side of busy Tilak Chowk turned violent on Thursday evening after she and three others abused and attacked a traffic policeman.
The Vishrambaug police arrested the biker’s husband and his cousin, both residents of Shivajinagar. The woman and her mother in-law were booked on the charge of obstructing the policeman from discharging duty under Section 353 of the Indian Penal Code.
Constable Sampat Karvande from the Vishrambaug traffic police, manning vehicles, stopped the woman rider for driving on the wrong side from Kelkar Chowk to Tilak Chowk around 5.30pm. But she picked up a dispute over the issue of signalling her to stop.
Karvande said, “The bike’s registration number showed pending fine of Rs5,000 on the traffic police app. The woman was asked to pay a fine of Rs500 for not possessing a driving licence and pay the pending dues of Rs5,000. She was told that driving on the wrong side attracts a fine of Rs5,000, but she was in no mood to listen as she was in a hurry to reach her destination.”
He said, “The woman connected me to a man over phone, but she suddenly disconnected the call after I instructed him to pay the pending fine. I advised the woman to return from the place she had come from. But she drove away through the wrong side.”
He said, “The woman and three others returned to the chowk around 6.30pm, abused me, pulled my shirt and attacked me. We then visited the nearby Sambhaji police chowkey, where they again misbehaved with the policemen, including an assistant commissioner of police.”
Sub-inspector Shankar Kumbhare said, “We have arrested the woman biker’s husband, Prem Raut (20), and his cousin Rohan Jawale (27), on the charge of attacking a policeman. Raut works in a private firm, while Jawale is a cable operator.”
