PUNE: Halting near Bopdeo Ghat on Pune-Saswad road and chatting proved rather costly for a couple, after they were assaulted by two men on a bike wielding a sword.
The 42-year-old man suffered a serious injury to his head, while his cellphone and his wife’s gold chain were snatched by the duo around 10.30pm on Wednesday.
By Thursday night, the Kondhwa police had arrested Sunny Bharat Pawar (25), a criminal on record of Pune rural police, and booked him along with his accomplice on the charge of armed robbery under sections of the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act.
The victims were identified as Balu Jadhav, a dental clinic employee and resident of Gujarwadi in Katraj, and his wife. They were riding on a bike to Waghapur in Purandar from Khadi Machine Chowk.
“After stopping to answer the call of nature, the couple was chatting when the duo arrived. The pillion rider brandished a sword and attacked Jadhav. They snatched his cell phone and his wife’s gold chain, collectively valued at Rs65,000 and fled towards Yeolewadi,” said assistant inspector Anil Survase.
He added, “Jadhav suffered seven stitches to his head. We intensified patrolling near the crime scene right away as we were sure the duo would strike again. Sure enough, we intercepted them. Bike rider Pawar was taken into custody and the vehicle seized. His accomplice escaped.”
Deputy commissioner of police (DCP-Zone V) Namrata Patil said, “Pawar was nabbed based on a description by Jadhav, who identified him later. CCTV footage captured images of the suspects. We are questioning Pawar on whether he is involved in other cases in Pune. A team is searching for the accomplice.”
This is the third brazen robbery in the city in recent days. On June 21, a retired techie (65) was mugged and thrown into a nullah in Kothrud; on June 26, a woman (25) was pushed off her bike and her gold chain snatched near Patil Estate slums. The older man sustained fractures, while the woman lost two teeth.
