“One of the intruders fired a bullet on the office floor to deter the firm’s two owners from putting up any resistance, while the other used the chopper to smash the glass cover of a counter. The duo and their two other accomplices then threw whatever cash parcels they could lay their hands on to their other aide,” additional commissioner of police Namdev Chavan said.
CCTV cameras inside the angadia office captured the incident. This is the second incident of its kind involving an service — a sort of parallel banking system wherein traders send cash, gold and diamonds from one place to another through couriers ( angadia ) — in the past three months.
On August 26, a gang of six men had opened fire and robbed two angadias of Rs3. 6 crore on the Pune-Solapur highway. The angadia office robbed on Saturday is on the mezzanine floor at the rear end of Ganaraj Market, a four-storied building near Gate No. 2 of Market Yard — the biggest wholesale trading hub in the city. CCTV footage from other commercial establishments on the front side of the building showed the five men running away, pulling out their scooters from a nearby place and driving away, the police said.
Additional commissioner of police Chavan said, “Rajesh Jayantilal Popat and Suresh Thakral, co-owners of the Professional Courier, as the angadia office is known, were engrossed in some conversation on their smartphones in the 10x10sqft facility when the gang-of-five moved in. Two of the intruders went into the cabin of the counter having a plywood wall and a glass panel in the front. Popat then realised that one of them was wielding a chopper and got up from his seat. ”
Chavan said, “Popat tried to resist and push the man out of the cabin. But the latter hit the sharp weapon on the glass panel, which broke into pieces. Popat then rushed behind his table. At this moment, another intruder pulled out a firearm and fireda bullet on the floor. Following this, the duo and two other men stormed into the cabin, picked up packets of cash and threw them out of the cabin. Their other accomplice picked them up and packed them in a bag. Within five minutes, the intruders ran away,” Chavan said.
Senior inspector Anagha Deshpande of the Market Yard police said, “We have initiated a process to register a case of dacoity against the five men. We are recovering more CCTV footage to ascertain their path. We are taking details of the cash from Popat and Thakral to establish its source and where it was to be sent. ”
The city police crime branch inspectors Hemant Patil and Balaji Pandhare inspected the scene of crimeand the surrounding area. “We believe the dacoits might have done a recce of the angadia office sometime back or one of them is familiar with the area and courier business,” said Patil.
A neighbouring shopkeeper said, “I was in my office. I did not hear any gunfire. I got to know about the incident when the police arrived at the spot. Upon enquiry, I came to know that the dacoits had opened fire in the courier office. ”
A large number of employees of different shops had gathered in front of the angadia office after the police arrived at the scene. One of them said, “Some men ran out of the building, but I thought they were youngsters from the neighbouring slums, who keep on playing in the area. ”
