Based on an eye-witness account, the police are searching for a woman and four others involved in the attack on the victim. The motive behind the killing is also being ascertained, an officer from the Hadapsar police said.
Police said victim Giridhar Gaikwad (20) was in his first year in a Masters in commerce degree course from a college at Hadapsar. His father, Uttareshwar Gaikwad, is posted as a jailor at the Amravati state prison.
Inspector (PI) Digambar Shinde of the Hadapsar police told TOI, “Our team reached the spot on being alerted by a caller. They saw Giridhar lying motionless with three stab wounds to his chest. A knife, a gupti (dagger), its cover, a sickle and chopper were found near the body. The victim’s phone was missing and the police established his identity from his driving licence and Aadhaar card.”
Shinde said, “Our police team then visited the home address mentioned in the licence, but realised no one was there. The police secured the contact number of the victim’s father from a neighbour and called him at 11.15pm. The father called other kin, who rushed to the spot.”
As per the PI, “An eye-witness, who was walking past the scene of crime, told police that he saw a woman and four others – all appearing to be in their early 20s – assaulting the victim and the latter collapsing, before the assailants ran away from the spot towards Saswad Road. The witness even chased the assailants till a certain distance.”
Deputy commissioner of police (DCP-zone V) Namrata Patil said, “The motive behind Gaikwad’s murder could not be established immediately. On Wednesday morning, the police detained three persons for questioning, but no arrest was made.”
The Gaikwads hail from Uruli Kanchan and have been residing at Manjari for the last three years. Giridhar’s elder brother, Nikhilkumar Gaikwad (28), has lodged a complaint in this case. TOI tried to contact Nikhilkumar, but his phone was switched off.
Shinde said, “The victim’s brother said in his complaint that Giridhar stepped out around 10pm.” Later, when the elder sibling called the victim, his phone rang once and got disconnected. Later, it was not reachable.
The body has been sent for a post-mortem to Sassoon General Hospital and a report is awaited. An FIR for offences under sections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered.
