PUNE: A man (36) from Pimple Jagtap in Shikrapur fell unconscious as seven-eight men kicked and punched on his head, chest and stomach after a homeopath (27) summoned them during a quarrel following his car hitting the woman’s scooter, resulting in her fall on Wagholi-Kharadi bypass around 1.45pm on Tuesday.
Police said the injured man, Mayur Mokashi, and his friend Gaurav Jagtap, a farmer also from Pimple Jagtap, were going to a mall on Pune-Ahmednagar highway in the car driven by Mokashi, employed in an oil depot in Shikrapur. The woman is a resident of Kharadi.
“Approaching a furniture shop on the bypass, Mokashi applied sudden brakes to his car because of some reason. His car skidded on the gravel-filled road, veered to the left and hit the woman’s scooter. A verbal exchange ensued and the woman, who injured her leg, called her brother. The latter reached the spot with his six to seven friends in two cars and started kicking and punching Mokashi to the extent of the victim falling unconscious, before leaving the spot,” said inspector (crime) Mangesh Jagtap from the Airport police on Wednesday.
Later, Gaurav took Mokashi to a private hospital and lodged a complaint with the Airport police. The hospital’s resident medical officer, Pratiksha Kaluse, told TOI, “The patient (Mokashi) has suffered blunt traumatic injuries to the abdomen, a swelling behind ears and internal traumatic muscle injuries. He has been kept under observation in the intensive care unit for 24 hours.”
Inspector Mangesh Jagtap said, “We have registered a case under sections 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 143, 147 and 149 (all related to unlawful assembly and rioting) of IPC against the girl, her brother and other attackers.”
Senior inspector Bharat Jadhav said, “A CCTV footage at another private hospital, where the woman is undergoing treatment for her leg injury, helped us in establishing the identity of five suspects. A police team visited their residence at Ovhalwadi in Kharadi, but none of them were found. We shall arrest them at the earliest.”
Gaurav told TOI, “Mokashi told the woman that he would bear her hospital expenses, but she started clicking photos of his car and made a few phone calls. Within minutes, seven to eight men reached the spot in two cars. One of them removed the ignition key of Mokashi’s car and then the group started brutally assaulting him.”
He said, “I called a friend on the phone and gave him information about the incident. After he reached the spot, we took Mokashi to the hospital where the woman was admitted. Three suspects present there again charged at us and sought reasons for taking him there and told us to dump him on the road. They later returned the car’s ignition key. The doctors in the hospital examined Mokashi, but after consulting his family members, we shifted him to another hospital, where he is recuperating.”
