PUNE: The Sangvi police on Sunday arrested a 32-year-old serial fraudster for duping a resident of New Sangvi of Rs4.5 lakh on the pretext of selling his sports utility vehicle.
The accused had taken money from the complainant in May last year. “The complainant had filed an application and after conducting an inquiry, we have registered a case under section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code,” senior inspector Sunil Tonpe of the Sangvi police told TOI.
“We took the accused, Sunny Date, into custody from Susgaon on Monday. He was arrested in July last year by the Chakan police for duping a software professional using the same modus and was out on bail,” sub-inspector M N Varude of the Sangvi police said. In this case, Date had put an advertisement on a website to sell his SUV.
“Date met the complainant at Shitolenagar in Old Sangvi and showed him the vehicle. Adeal was made to purchase the same at Rs6.70 lakh,” Varude said.
He added, “Date had asked the complainant to pay an advance following which the latter transferred Rs4.5 lakh online, Varude added.
Police investigations revealed how Date had been duping people of their money for the past few months. “He used to run an interior designing business had and started duping people to repay a loan he took,” Varude said.
