“Satellite images indicated that the moisture is depleting from the north, north-west and partially from the west as well. But in Maharashtra, moisture depletion is taking place at a slow rate in the southern parts of the state, including Pune. It is mainly due to the presence of an upper air cyclonic circulation off South Konkan-Goa, and the adjacent coast area over the Arabian Sea,” Anupam Kashyapi, head of the forecast division of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune, told TOI.
The met officials said that the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the state has begun. It is likely to withdraw completely by the third week of October. This complete monsoon withdrawal was reported on October 28 in 2020 and October 25 in 2021.
Meanwhile, evening rains on Friday resulted in heavy waterlogging on arterial thoroughfares, including Jangli Maharaj (JM) Road, Fergusson College (FC) Road and other routes in Shivajinagar. Commuters faced a tough time and traffic movement was sluggish for an extended duration.
The traffic police had to regulate vehicular flow manually as traffic lights at some junctions stopped functioning. “We had to deploy extra manpower at key traffic junctions to regulate vehicular movement and reduce congestion on main roads of the city,” said a senior police officer of the traffic department.
Waterlogging was reported at several locations in core areas of the city, said the police. At some spots, traffic personnel had to open drainage covers to let accumulated rainwater flow out, said the police.
Commuters lamented the poor state of city roads and traffic congestion. “Rain in the afternoon or evening hours has been disturbing the daily traffic schedule for the last few days. The poor condition of most roads makes things worse for all commuters,” said Sandeep Mishra, a software professional.
Akash Kale, another professional, said, “The waterlogging on roads results in traffic snarls almost on all roads daily. It is a nightmare to travel back home from the office these days.”
