PUNE: Around six men opened fire on a car and robbed Rs3.6 crore of two angadias (private courier delivery men) after intercepting their vehicle on the Pune-Solapur highway at Varkute-Pati in Indapur around 2.30am on Friday, after probably getting leads about the cash transportation from a former colleague of the victims.
The robbery came to light after the car driver, Bhaveshkumar Patel, and his colleague Vijaybhai Solanki, both angadias, and their employer Nimesh Patel reported the incident to the Indapur police around 11am.
Abhinav Deshmukh, the superintendent of police (SP), Pune rural, told TOI on Saturday, “The robbers travelling in two cars intercepted the vehicle of the angadias and looted Rs3.6 crore. CCTV footage retrieved from various toll booths captured images of the robbers trailing the targeted car of the angadias in two cars. We have recovered fingerprints of the robbers from the victims’ vehicle.”
Deshmukh said, “We have recovered an empty cartridge from the car.”
Deshmukh said, “One of the robbers had used a country-made pistol (7.32mm) for opening fire on the vehicle. Wehave formed four teams, two from the Indapur police and two from the crime branch, for detecting the case because the robbery was executed in a planned manner.” The SP said, “We suspect that a former having information of the movement of the unaccounted cash may have leaked the details to the robbers.
Our suspicion is based on the fact that information related to cash transactions otherwise does not get leaked.” Inspector Ashok Shelke from the rural police crime branch said, “Patel from Mumbai, having roots in Mehsana in Gujarat, collected money from businessmen in Nanded, Latur and Solapur. He was going to Mumbai from Pune when one of the four men standing on the roadside threatened him with an iron road and signalled him to stop, but in vain. Patel picked up speed after he saw the robbers chasing him in cars.
One of the robbers fired two rounds on the left side of Patel’s car after he slowed down at a speed breaker. Patel and his colleague escaped unhurt.” He said, “The robbers then intercepted Patel’s car, and thrashed him and his colleague. They forced Patel to sit in their vehicle, gagged his mouth with a cloth, robbed his two cellphones worth Rs12,000 and Rs14,000, and enquired about where he had kept drugs and cash. Patel revealed the details of the cash after a robber placed a pistol on his temple. The robbers then took Rs3.6 crore from the rear seat safe of Patel’s car, took U-turn and sped away towards Solapur.”
Shelke said, “We are conducting investigations in Pune, Satara and Solapur districts. Patel has registered an FIR under sections 395 (dacoity), 397 (using deadly weapons while committing dacoity) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code, Maharashtra Police Act and Arms Act.” Patel told the police the suspects were in the age group of 30-35 years.
