KOLKATA: With the two preceding batches having done most of the classes online due to Covid and missed the freshers’ welcome when incidents of ragging takes place, city colleges hope to continue with the break in the chain by taking an anti-ragging self-declaration from students taking admission into undergraduate courses that commence from September 19.
Several colleges had introduced it in a manual form before the pandemic. The two-year break makes the fresh batch more vulnerable since they will be joining higher education after having missed the final two years of school and need to be protected, say college authorities.
New Alipore College has planned to ask for a written declaration from first-year students at the time of document verification. Principal Joydeep Sarangi said, “First-year students will enter higher education having skipped regular classes for two years. So it is our responsibility to give them a healthy college atmosphere as a gift from our side and ensure they are not ragged.”
Scottish Church College has posted an affidavit form on the college website which students have to fill up before admission. Principal Madhumanjari Mandal said: “We are asking students to fill-up online self-declaration forms according to the UGC guideline and it is mandatory. We had a manual format earlier but from this year it will be online.” The college has created an anti-ragging squad this year. There are two existing anti- ragging committees. Anti-ragging squads will visit campuses and hostels to sensitize students against ragging.
Lady Brabourne College and Maulana Azad College have been seeking such declarations from students since the pre-pandemic years. Lady Brabourne College has planned to organize an orientation programme for first-year students on September 19, the first day of the academic session. Principal Siuli Sarkar said: “We couldn’t arrange an offline orientation programme for the last two years due to Covid. This year, we have arranged it at our auditorium where we will sensitize them about ragging.” The faculty members of the anti-ragging cell will also sensitize students at the time of the hostel orientation programme.
All undergraduate students will be attending offline classes after two years, which could revive the old malpractice, fear college authorities.
