BENGALURU: Public works department minister CC Patil on Tuesday said 141km of state highways, 924km of major district roads, and 357 bridges were damaged/ destroyed in recent incessant rain that lashed several districts. The estimated loss was pegged at Rs 754 crore.
“The state government has already released Rs 200 crore for immediate repairs which will be taken up on a war footing,” Patil said. He said a 3km stretch between Koppalli and Kesaganahalli is being widened to facilitate movement of vehicles from Mangaluru to Bengaluru and once it is ready, heavy vehicles will be allowed to ply on Shiradi Ghat. “It will take a week to complete the temporary road. The department has already issued a work order and work will begin tomorrow,” he said.
Movement of heavy vehicles has been banned on Shiradi Ghat since last week following a series of landslides at Donigal near Sakaleshpur. Patil, who held a meeting with National Highway Authority of India officials, expressed displeasure over delays in widening of the NH stretch. “I have instructed officials to speed up work. We want it completed by March 2023,” Patil said. “If necessary, I will discuss the matter with Nitin Gadkari (Union minister for road transport and highways).” Patil said a team of experts from Delhi is in Madikeri to strengthen the retaining wall of the Madikeri DC office, which is on the verge of collapse. “Based on their report, corrective measures will be taken,” he said.
