Rasika Dugal is currently on cloud nine as she has been nominated in the Best Actress category for ‘Lootcase’ and ‘Mirzapur 2’ at the prestigious Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2021 Awards. In an exclusive interview with ETimes, the actress opened up about the fantastic response she received for her roles, exploring the genre of comedy, and working with Pankaj Tripathi. Excerpts…

You have been nominated in the Best Actress category for both ‘Lootcase’ and ‘Mirzapur 2’ at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne. How does it feel?
It usually feels great when you are nominated for an award but this one feels special because I have been nominated for both a film and a series, in the Best Actress category. It is exciting and I am very happy. Both the films belong to completely different genres, ‘Lootcase’ is comedy and ‘Mirzapur’ is well ‘Mirzapur’ (laughs). My characters Lata and Beena are also totally different from each other.

Did you anticipate that your performance would get you such reactions?
Actually, I have zero expectations from my projects once I am done with them. During the project, I have a lot of expectations from myself and the people I collaborate with. I am always hoping that we are putting out best foot forward. What is exciting about filmmaking is that you don’t have an opportunity to redo it, unlike theatres where you have another show where you can do better. But what you have shot, will remain forever. So, I am always excited about what I am doing on a shoot on any given day, but where the show will go, what will happen to it, how many people will watch it, are things beyond my control.

Are you planning to attend the festival in person?
The event is going to be online this year. I am not going to get a chance to attend it but Melbourne is one of my favourite cities in the world; I really wanted to go there. It is a culturally vibrant city; so much is happening there artistically all the time. I would love to go there but in better times. I have heard so much about this festival too; in fact, many of my friends have been there.

‘Lootcase’ was like a breath of fresh air for your fans who have seen you in intense and serious roles. What was your first thought when you were approached for the film?
It was kind of a fresh breath of air for me as well. I had just finished shooting for ‘Delhi Crime’ season one at that time. It was such an emotionally massive experience that I was looking for something lighter. I was feeling emotionally spent because of the nature of the content in ‘Delhi Crime’. More than anything else, I was thrilled to have a song to dance to in ‘Lootcase’; I wanted to have such a quintessential Bollywood experience in my career. For all those reasons, it was really exciting.

Do you think comedy is more difficult than other genres?
It depends; I haven’t done much comedy. I don’t know my way around it, as I do around a drama, for example. Even while watching something, my choices are mostly drama, suspense, or rom-com. Comedy is something that I have been drawn to recently. It is also mostly because of the gloom around due to the pandemic that I ended up watching a lot of comedy in the past year. I personally find it more difficult than the rest because of my lack of experience in the genre.

How was it on the sets of ‘Lootcase’ with Kunal Kemmu as your co-star?
Kunal is very familiar with comedy. He has done comic work. He was very comfortable where he was and that automatically made me comfortable. One of the best things about having a relaxed co-star is that it calms your nerves too. The director and writer, too, had a whacky sense of humour. So, it was really entertaining to be on that set. For all the characters that I take up, I have to do a lot of research to get into the skin of the character, but this time I didn’t have to do that. I just turned up on the sets and had a good time.

What kind of reactions did you get after ‘Mirzapur 2’?
People are so invested in ‘Mirzapur’ that they are constantly communicating about it, which I feel is lovely. There have been lots of responses. While many have been thrilled that Beena got her revenge, others are keen to know what she will do next and what will happen to her now. There were many emotionally invested audiences who told me that they felt as violated as Beena did at the end of the first season. Even I am very happy that she had her moment. She got a chance to get her dignity back. People derived strength from her.
