PUNE: A 71-year-old Army Colonel (retired) lost Rs 2.5 crore to cyber crooks between April and May in the biggest online task fraud reported so far in the city.
The victim gave a complaint application to the Pune cyber police on Monday. Its verification process has been started before the registration of an FIR.
Senior inspector Meenal Patil of the cyber police said, “The colonel (retired) stays in the Bund Garden area. He told us that he had received a message on WhatsApp offering handsome income against writing online reviews and liking videos.”
She said, “The message mentioned that he could work in his free time and they would pay him good money for online tasks. He responded to the message and the fraudsters started chatting with him. They never called him.”
Senior inspector Meenal Patil of the cyber police said, “Initially, the crooks paid him for some tasks. Then they told him to invest in their pre-paid task schemes with a promise of higher returns, along with a refund.”
Patil said, “The victim kept transferring money of varied amounts to 48 bank accounts given by the crooks. He exhausted all his savings and retirement benefits by the time he realised that he had been cheated. Throughout this period, he never discussed the matter with his family members.” She said, “Soon after the colonel (retired) approached us with his complaint, we wrote to banks, asking them to freeze the 48 accounts to salvage whatever amount was left there. We have noted details of phones and other internet-based messaging applications the fraudsters used to reach the retired officer. Further investigation is on.”
