BENGALURU: A gang of cybercriminals trapped a 75-year-old retired government officer by making him believe that he was having a video chat with a nude girl, and extorted Rs 6 lakh from him.
Manjunath (name changed), a resident of BTM Layout, was blackmailed by the gang which recorded a video chat he had with the girl. The gang members threatened him that they would leak the video on social media and defame him. A scared Manjunath transferred the money to the gang, but recently decided to approach police after the miscreants demanded more money.

Manjunath told police he received a link in October and clicked it. It took him to a video call with a girl, who was in the nude. The miscreants recorded the video, shared it with Manjunath and started blackmailing him. They demanded money and he transferred Rs 6.2 lakh to the gang in multiple transactions between November 15 and 23.
Preliminary investigation revealed that two persons introducing themselves as Saurav and Baljit Rai had made extortion calls to Manjunath. Southeast CEN Crime police have registered a case and are trying to trace and arrest the suspects.
The duo allegedly plays the video of a girl removing her clothes on the mobiles of their victims, manages to make them believe that it’s a live video call and gets them to take off their clothes. After the call ends, they forward the recording to their victims and demand money. Police have advised the public to not respond to chats that ask them to undress during calls.
