NEW DELHI: The Serum Institute of India (SII) said on Wednesday it would sell the AstraZeneca vaccine, which is known as Covishield in India, to state governments at Rs 400 per dose and to private hospitals at Rs 600.
Serum’s price announcement came after the Centre last week opened India’s Covid-19 vaccination drive to all adults from May 1 onwards.
The government has also permitted vaccine manufacturers to sell 50 per cent of their monthly cache to the Centre and the rest 50 per cent to states and in the open market.
As of now, SII is selling Covishield to the Centre at Rs 150 per dose. Additionally, those who are eligible for the vaccine right now can get it at Rs 250 per dose from private hospitals.
The company said that it won’t be selling vaccines to corporates as of now due to “complexity and urgency” at the moment.
“We would urge all corporate and private individuals to access the vaccines through the state facilitated machinery and private health systems.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday in an interaction with the leading vaccine manufacturers from across the country had urged to continuously scale up the production capacity to vaccinate the citizens in the shortest possible time.
The Prime Minister had also assured all possible support and a smooth approval process for the vaccine candidates which are currently under trial phase.
According to the government data, a total of 29,90,197 people have been vaccinated in the last 24 hours, taking the total inoculation count to 13,01,19,310.

On Wednesday, a total of 2,95,041 fresh infections were registered in a span of 24 hours, pushing India’s total tally of Covid-19 cases to 1,56,16,130 while the active cases crossed the 21-lakh mark, the data updated at 8 am showed.
