BENGALURU: A 24-year-old bank employee who had trespassed into an apartment was beaten to death by two security guards who suspected that he was a robber. The incident took place at Marathahalli, near HAL.
The accused are Shyamnath Ree, 25, and Ajith Mura, 23, security guards at Vanshee Citadel apartment.
Police said Abhinash, a bank employee in Odisha, had come to the city to attend a training session and is likely to have entered the apartment by mistake, after losing his way. Initially, cops were unable to identify the deceased as he was not carrying any identification documents and his mobile phone was drained of charge. Experts eventually managed to unlock it.
Police said Ree was on night duty and, around 2am on July 5, noticed a stranger climbing the main gate and jumping on to the apartment premises. Ree stopped the man and sought his identification. The intruder did not say anything and appeared drunk. He tried to move ahead, towards the flats. Ree suspected he was a thief and allegedly assaulted him with a rod. Ree called his colleague Mura for help and they together beat the intruder to death.
Sathiya Seelan, a resident at the apartment, filed a police complaint. He said Ree was worried about losing his job had the intruder stolen valuables from the flats.
Police said Abhinash was from Chhattisgarh and had come to Bengaluru a week ago. He was staying with his elder brother’s friends in Marathahalli. He had partied on July 4 and lost his way while returning home. Cops said the guards had no right to punish anyone. Ree and Mura were produced in court and remanded in judicial custody.
