With the Supreme Court‘s recent greenlight for traditional sports like Kambala and Jallikattu, the stage has been set for modernization of the sport with introduction of technology and also the likely entry of women participants in the coming season starting November.
Recently, the Supreme Court upheld amendments made by Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, to allow bull-taming sports of Jallikattu and Kambala, besides bullock-cart racing.
While experts are working on introducing technology so that the race is captured from the start to a possible photo-finish without leaving any room for disputes or ambiguities, women are all set to be trained in the sport by Kambala academy in the coastal district. If all goes as per plan, women are set to storm the second biggest coastal bastion: First, unique theatre form Yakshagana, and now Kambala.
K Gunapala Kadamba, founder-secretary of Dakshina Kannada Kambala Committee, told TOI that experts are holding discussions on introducing technology that will bring in transparency and prevent delay at the start point. The main aim is to ensure Kambala events wind up within 24 hours.
Kadamba said, “The Kambala academy, which functions from Miyar and Moodbidri and has been conducting training for jockeys for many years, is contemplating training women in various aspects of Kambala, a traditional male-dominant sport of Tulunadu. The academy is hoping to train women as announcers, flag-bearers and also jockeys. However, women will be allowed to participate only in modern Kambalas…”
Training will likely be provided by sports coaches. Students will have to stay with parents or guardians during the training period.
