KOLKATA: Over 500 pilgrims from Gangasagar, who were stranded in dense fog and low tide since Sunday evening, were rescued by the Coast Guard on Monday afternoon.
The vessels — MV Ichhamati and MV Agramati — were ferrying 511 pilgrims from Sagar Island to Kakdwip. The state sent relief items to the vessels stuck in the shallow waters and sought help from the Coast Guard to conduct a rescue operation.
ICG officials said it received a message from the South 24 Parganas DM around 9.15am on Monday, intimating about grounding of the two ferries. After ascertaining the position, two hovercraft were dispatched from Haldia and Frazerganj to provide rescue assistance. “Our rescue team reached the scene around 9.45am and reassured the passengers. Around 10am, the hovercraft started evacuating people to the nearest point at Kakdwip. The exercise was completed around 1pm,” said an ICG official.
