BENGALURU: Close on the heels of the Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) “Yellow Alert” (Heavy Rainfall) over Bengaluru and adjoining districts within South Interior Karnataka, the city witnessed heavy thundershowers and gusty winds on Tuesday afternoon uprooting several trees and leaving low lying areas in many parts of the city inundated.

Dark clouds engulfing the city gave way to heavy thundershowers coupled with gusty winds with speeds up to 40 kmph throwing the traffic out of gear in Central Business District (CBD) areas of Bengaluru.
Heavy thunderstorms were reported from Shanthinagar, Jayanagar, KR Market, Vijayanagar, Gandhinagar, Rajajinagar and JP Nagar. The IMD officials in a revised forecast cautioned heavy thunderstorms and lightning in many places of Bengaluru on Tuesday evening and Wednesday as well.
An autorickshaw driver and motorists had a narrow escape from death when a huge tree was uprooted on the Kamala Nagar main road near the BWSSB office.

However, many vehicles suffered severe damage in the incident. Officials revealed that at least 5 trees were uprooted in several zones of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
Due to clogged stormwater drains and shoulder drains, many roads were flooded and motorists wading through the flooded water was a common scenario on all major roads.

Underpasses flooded
Even as the tragic incident involving a car submerged in the flooded underpass killing a techie was still afresh in the minds of the people, many underpasses were flooded during Tuesday’s rains that lashed the city for over two hours. A video of a biker trying to retrieve his bike from a flooded underpass near Shivananda Circle has gone viral on the Internet. Luckily, the biker managed to pull out his bike from the flooded waters and escape from the underpass.
Similarly, the busy underpass in Lingarajapuram was also flooded with three feet of water on Tuesday afternoon. Several autos and two-wheeler riders were stuck in the water after engines developed snag due to the flooding waters. Motorists were seen pushing the vehicles out of the flooded water.
