KOLKATA: Music teacher Soma Bhaduri of Bidya Bharati Girls’ High School in New Alipore has been terminated of service from June 1 because the managing committee of the school has decided to discontinue music as a subject “since it is not a compulsory subject within the current curriculum of junior middle section (Class V, VI, VII) of West Bengal Board of Secondary Education.” Bhaduri was given the letter on May 31.
However, Bhaduri alleges that she was terminated because she had switched to wearing salwar-kameez from saree to the institute after she had reportedly tripped while alighting from a crowded bus one day.
“I am confident that my termination is linked to my wearing of salwar-kameez to school instead of saree. I told my headmistress about the incident that happened to me on February 21 while coming to school and pointed out that wearing a saree is proving to be risky. During the Madhyamik, I wore sarees to school and after that I have been wearing salwar-kameez. Since then no classes have been allotted to me. All music classes were being converted into other subject classes,” Bhaduri said.
TOI tried to contact headmistress Sharmistha Banerjee through calls and texts but she did not respond.
The school had also replied to the explanation sought by The West Bengal Commission for Women. TOI had reported earlier that the commission had sought an explanation from Bidya Bharati Girls’ High School after a teacher complained.
The letter given by the school to the commission stated that the allegations by Bhaduri against the school authority is “out and out false,” “imaginary” and “concocted.”
Commission chairperson Leena Gangopadhyay said, “The explanation given by the school is beyond the purview of the Commission.”
