KOLKATA: The East division of Kolkata Police, the newest among its nine divisions, is set to get a new police station in Survey Park that will be handled by female cops to exclusively deal with crimes against women.
The ninth all-woman police station in the city will start with 31 personnel—an inspector, five sub-inspectors, five assistant sub-inspectors and the rest constables and civic volunteers.
So far, the East division was the only one that did not have a women’s police station in its jurisdiction. “Victims living between Panchasayar and Pragati Maidan can now approach this police station instead of travelling all the way to Lalbazar,” said an officer at the police headquarters. The formal inauguration, which was slated for Friday, has, however, been pushed back owing to “last moment developments”. “It is likely to be inaugurated by police commissioner Vineet Goyal as soon as possible,” said a source.
The police station will function out of the premises of the existing Survey Park police station till its own building comes up. It will exclusively investigate crimes against women, particularly dowry and domestic violence cases, abduction and sexual offences. Officers pointed out sexual offence survivors usually felt more comfortable speaking to women cops and so, this initiative. “The aim is to instil confidence among women victims so that they can report more and more crimes committed against them. When we are asking women to open up about domestic violence, it is important to set up the infrastructure to deal with them,” said an officer.
Mamata Banerjee, soon after becoming the chief minister, had announced the setting up of 65 women’s police stations across the state. While the first one came up in Asansol in 2012, in Kolkata, the promise was fulfilled in 2018, when the state cabinet gave the go-ahead for four facilities at Tollygunge, Watgunge, Patuli and Amherst Street. Subsequently, two more were opened in Behala, Taltala, Tollygunge and Karaya.
