PUNE: The city experienced a slightly warm Saturday as day temperatures rose in comparison to the pleasant 29C to 31C range seen for the past few days.
As thundershowers abated, the mainly clear skies and heat pushed the maximum temperature in Shivajinagar on Saturday to 33.8C. In areas like Lavale, maximum temperatures rose to 35.5C, while in Koregaon Park, it went up to 35.4°C. In Wadgaonsheri, it rose to 34.9°C and it was 33.7°C in Chinchwad.

Anupam Kashyapi, the head of the India Meteorological Department‘s weather forecasting division told TOI: “The day temperatures are likely to remain in this range during the next few days. We can expect the rest of March to be almost near to pleasant as temperatures are not expected to rise drastically during the next few days.”
Kashyapi said that parts of north-central Maharashtra, including Pune district and city, are seeing the penetration of northerly wind flow. This wind pattern will continue for the next two to three days. “Thus, day temperatures are likely to remain more or less pleasant while the late night/early morning temperatures are also going to range between 15C to 17°C in parts of Pune. Even though the northerly wind flow does not tend to impact temperatures much during the second half of March in Maharashtra, observations indicate that this pattern is the main reason why day and night temperatures in parts of the state, including Pune, are more or less on the lower side of normal currently,” he added.
He explained that the northerly wind flow is relatively cooler because it originates from the extreme northern regions of north India, where there were also some instances of rain and snowfall recently due to the passage of consecutive western disturbances. These conditions are not letting temperatures rise even though it is nearing the end of March, when summer begins.
On Saturday, Shivajinagar’s day temperature at 33.8°C was 2.4 degrees below normal in comparison to the average March daily temperature, while the minimum temperature was 15.3°C, which was 1.2 degrees below normal.
However, the current day temperature is still nearly 2C to 3°C higher than what was being recorded a few days ago. For instance, on March 21, the day temperature had dropped to 29.8°C in Shivajinagar and had remained around 31°C on many days during that period.
