MELBOURNE: Thirteen children in the middle of a desert, a batsman in the middle of his run between the wickets and three men on camels ambling by in the backdrop. Steve Waugh’s image of kids playing cricket among sand dunes near Osian in Rajasthan is the Wisden Photograph of the Year 2020.
What went behind that image, and the book it was part of, was a 17-day trip after “18 months of planning and 30 years of reflection”.
“Since I first toured India, 30 years ago, I would be on the team bus, always in the front … I was fascinated by the constant chaos, action and people playing wherever they found space. I would have my camera on me all the time and would take shots, but I couldn’t get outside the bus and among the people,” Waugh, the most capped captain in Test history, told TOI.
His tour diaries would be full of photographs. “It was at the back of my mind that one day I would go back to India and take the shots I had seen through the bus and car windows.” Over 18 months, the book of images, ‘Spirit of Cricket India’, was conceptualised. For 17 days in January 2020, Waugh and his team took nine flights across India, working 14 hours a day and, eventually, capturing 20,000 images.
