Three persons died when a mini truck and a bike fell off the Phaphamau bridge following a head-on collision between two vehicles, early on Friday morning.
The incident caused a major traffic jam for several hours as one of the trucks involved in the accident dangled from the edge of the bridge and was pulled up after much effort.
Police officials said primary investigations revealed that a mini truck carrying parcels to the city collided with another truck loaded with stones going towards Phaphamau. The driver of the truck carrying parcels lost control and the truck broke through the railing of the bridge and fell several hundred feet on the sandy, dry riverbed of the Ganga.
A person on a motorcycle going towards Phaphamau also lost control and fell from the bridge. The two persons in the truck and the bike rider died in the mishap, officials said.
Inspector Ashish Singh, SHO, Phaphamau police station, said that the police have recovered two bodies from the mini truck. The bodies were later identified as that of driver Himanshu Sahu (23) and his brother Anshu Sahu (20) of Nagram area of Lucknow.
The person on the bike was identified as Bajrang Bahadur Singh of Atrampur village, located in the Nawabganj area. He was a security guard at MNNIT and was returning home from duty, the SHO added.
