UDUPI: After launching a pilot project to give polling stations a vibrant look, the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) Committee of Udupi has now gone a step further, inviting the public to participate in a competition to paint the walls of the polling booths in the district.
First prize winners will take home Rs 8,000, while Rs 6,000 and Rs 4,000 will be awarded for the second and third places, respectively. Two consolation prizes of Rs 2,000 each will also be given.
The wall-painting competition, to be held on March 24 from 9am to 5pm, will see polling stations in every taluk sport a brighter look. Registration can be done through Google forms. Recently, more than 30 teachers painted five polling stations in Hanumantha Nagar School, creating quite a buzz.
Spelling out the rules of the competition, zilla panchayat CEO Prasanna H said while paint will be provided by the SVEEP Committee, participants will need to carry the tools.
Students, as well as government and private sector employees, can participate. Two-member teams of contestants will also be allowed, Prasanna added.
The basic theme for the competition is Yakshagana, Kambala and the famous Udupi handloom sarees. In addition, artists can also focus on pottery, basket-weaving and folklore among other subjects, but no symbols of political parties will be allowed. The work will have to be original and can be based on warli art as well.
Prasanna said the objective is to create a festive spirit around elections and to highlight creativity. “Our aim is to paint the 1,111 polling stations in phases,” he said. In addition to cash prizes, there will also be a certificate of appreciation. Those interested can call 9880505271 or 9481971071 for more details.
