As Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra entered Ghaziabad on Tuesday, the Congress leader was mostly flanked by party leaders and Priyanka Vadra, the party’s general secretary and his sister. However, leaders of other political parties in Uttar Pradesh who were invited to join the Yatra gave it a miss.

On Monday, former chief minister and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and former chief minister and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati tweeted to wish the Bharat Jodo Yatra and Rahul Gandhi success.

Trilok Tyagi, national general secretary of the Rashtriya Lok Dal, said, “Our leader Jayant Chaudhary has praised Gandhi for taking out the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Uttar Pradesh. He was out of country so he could not attend the yatra. However, our MLAs and other leaders will welcome the yatra in Baghpat and Shamli. We welcome the issues raised by Rahul Gandhi. The yatra must raise issues pertaining to farmers such as pending sugarcane payments, as well as unemployment in the western region.”

The office-bearers of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) said Rakesh Tikait and Naresh Tikait were also invited but they will not attend the yatra, since BKU “being a non-political organisation cannot support a yatra held by a political party”. The BKU played a major role in the farmers’ agitation in Ghaziabad in 2020-21 against three farm acts passed by the central government, which were later repealed .

“But our wishes are with Rahul Gandhi. Even our supporters and members may join the yatra in western Uttar Pradesh and there is no bar. The yatra has raised issues and it should also highlight the issues of farmers and employment of youth as most of the youngsters from western Uttar Pradesh prefer to take employment in the armed services,” said Gaurav Tikait, BKU’s youth wing president.

He added, “Our leaders will meet Rahul Gandhi in Haryana during the yatra and will put farmers’ issues before him. They will urge him to get these resolved in Congress-ruled states.”

On Tuesday in Loni, National Conference leaders and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah was present at the yatra and he hugged both Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi.

Dolly Sharma, Uttar Pradesh Congress spokesperson, said, “Many politicians have wished our leader Rahul Gandhi for his yatra and even if they were not present in Ghaziabad, the yatra will proceed and Rahulji will lead it till Kashmir. The yatra has taken up the issues of masses and is also spreading love and harmony.”

Political experts said the Yatra has energised the part’s units on its route. “The yatra is garnering support for the party and is also giving a message that Congress leaders are coming on streets and meeting people. Western Uttar Pradesh has several pending issues, but the major issue of safety and security has to an extent been tackled by the state government,” said KK Sharma, associate professor (history) from CCS University, Meerut.

The Bharat Jodo Yatra started from Kanyakumari on September 7 and passed through several states before reaching Delhi in its first phase. After entering Ghaziabad on Tuesday, it will travel to Baghpat and Shamli on January 4 and 5 before entering Haryana on January 6.

It will then travel to Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
